My target 120 mi

I’m fundraising for The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

I'm taking part in the DofE Do it 4 Youth Challenge cycling 120 miles before the end of March, raising vital funds for the DofE charity more young people facing financial barriers can access the life-changing Awards programme and transform their lives.  Please support me by sponsoring as much as you can.

I am not a particularly active person and I haven't ridden a bike in many years. So although it doesn't seem like a huge amount of miles in the month, it is a step out of my comfort zone. I have decided to try to raise £1 for each mile that I cycle. I will post updates here and on my Facebook page. I'm going to start on 1st March, wearing my Do It 4 Youth t-shirt!! Thank you for your support.

My Updates

Day 31 part 2

Monday 31st Mar
I really wanted to end the challenge knowing that I'd finished, rather than by me not being able to count properly, so I added a few miles to my overall total with a triumphant 3 miles. Appropriate that the final photo is on the driveway with the seafront behind be, bearing in mind that a large chunk of all of the miles done have had the sea to my side. Very pleased with myself, very pleased to have smashed my fundraising target and very thankful to have so many supporters who have generously donated to the wonderful cause that is the DofE. Thank you all for donating, supporting and reading.

Day 31 part 1

Monday 31st Mar
Oops. I have just found my limitation! Add up my rides to date and I have mentally forgotten about one. I have smashed 121.6 miles before a ride today. So I will do a little ride today so I can proudly ride in my 'Do it 4 Youth 120 mile Challenge' t-shirt. Look out for the final update later.

Day 30

Monday 31st Mar
Happy birthday to Niamh, so no ride.

Day 29

Monday 31st Mar
An early morning ride in the glorious sunshine. The riding is very easy going and progress is always good. 7 miles again which leaves me with just a short 5 mile ride to finish. Meet 'The Shell Lady of Margate', Mrs Booth, who stands at the end of the harbour arm.

Days 27 and 28

Monday 31st Mar
Due to fieldwork trips and life, no rides.

Day 26

Monday 31st Mar
Took in Antony Gormley's 'man' sculpture today on my 7 miles. Very easy today. Probably 2 rides to go and I'll be done.

Day 25

Monday 31st Mar
I enjoy this route. Takes in the sights of Margate. Much quieter on the seafront, so a fairly well paced 7 miles. The end is approaching quickly now. Thanks Ed Amey for sorting the bike. It stops now!!

Day 24

Tuesday 25th Mar
Another 7 miles chalked up taking me past the 100 mile mark. A week left and 19 miles to go. Feels like I could do it comfortably.

Day 23

Sunday 23rd Mar
A murky Sunday morning after the twins birthday exploits. The seafront was busy which made progress a little more tricky, but the ride was good and progress was made. Fact approaching the 100 mile mark! A week to go.

Day 22

Saturday 22nd Mar
A cycle before dog training classes, and this time I headed to Palm Bay. Its such a shame that the Winter Gardens has been left like this. East ride today and getting less painful each time I do it. Longest ride yet, with various loops, making sure I stay on the seafront, enjoying the views and life we lead here

Day 21

Saturday 22nd Mar
Happy 14th birthday to our twins. Meal out, no cycling.

Day 20

Saturday 22nd Mar
An amazing ride after school. Zero puffs of wind making for a very enjoyable and productive cycle. The photo op today was at the end of the harbour arm looking back across Margate main beach to the house. Even stopped to chat with the workers about the reprofiling going on.

Days 18 and 19

Saturday 22nd Mar
Life is happening again so no rides.

Day 17

Monday 17th Mar
There's going to be no riding today. A very late night in the hospital again with Tom and only 3 hours sleep. Not conducive to cycling progress.

Day 16

Sunday 16th Mar
Sunny Sunday! 2 loops again, slightly less painful heading east. Feeling like 3 degrees in the wind didn't help, but 7 miles done again.

Day 15

Sunday 16th Mar
A blustery Saturday morning. Aiming for 2 loops again. Hard work heading east each time, but much smoother in the seafront heading west. I have now competed 61 miles so just broke the half way point with 2 weeks left.

Day 14

Sunday 16th Mar
Back on it today. After my three day break, I needed to get moving, so even after a family visit to the dentist, I did find the motivation on a Friday evening to get out and going again. I have changed route again to work in loops, so I head out towards Margate, then turn towards St Mildred's bay, return to the house, and repeat. Sun was low in the sky but a nice end to the week. Fast approaching the half way point on the month and the total distance.

Days 11, 12 and 13

Sunday 16th Mar
Due to hospital visits with Tom and the general mess he was in, I had three days 'off'. No progress made, but with the extra miles I had done, I was still just about on target. 4 miles a day for 30 days was the plan.

Day 10

Monday 10th Mar
Frustrated today. Headed off towards Margate and it didn't take me long to realise I've tweaked my knee somehow. I was not settling comfortably into todays ride. Feeling a little disheartened. Turned early but as I approached the house, I decided I needed to work through the pain, so I did another lap of sorts. So, an awkward 4.5 miles in all.

Day 9

Sunday 9th Mar
Went for 7 miles this morning. Took the JGD advice and rode to Margate first. It was busy on the seafront but the Red Bus Cafe smelt awesome. Still not been there yet! Beautiful mornings ride and felt very good doing it. Impressed myself with the 35 minute time. Might still be hard on the quads, but definitely seeing an improvement in strength and stamina, so much so that I didn't stop at Epple Bay, forgot to take a photo, so todays is of the final 100m from the Barnes Road car park to the house.

Day 8

Saturday 8th Mar
Saturday morning ride on my own as no-one awake yet. Lovely and sunny but with that annoying breeze that affects you on the way out or the way home!! At the turning point, I photographed the other way. You can see across to Birchington. My route takes in Westbrook Bay, St Mildred's Bay, and West Bay.

Day 7

Saturday 8th Mar
A gentle ride with Tom again. With his long term health issues, its really important he's active when he can be, I'm not trying to kill him, but the ride yesterday lead to his best nights sleep in ages. The 5 mile loop is very manageable with the first road section, so it doesn't seem as daunting. At the end of this ride, I have done the equivalent of 2 Bronze DofE expeditions! The water is so calm at the turning point today.

Day 6

Thursday 6th Mar
Number 1 son joined me today and I decided to add to the route. Yesterday felt ok so put an extra mile onto the loop. Slower pace so I didn't kill the boy but with the fine weather and a chat along the way, it went really well. Beat our target time of 45 mins so we finished the day positively and smiling.

Day 5

Wednesday 5th Mar
Improved time today. Getting a bit more used to this. The bike is set up properly now, so its only the sore quads to deal with now. Maybe I should try stretching before I go??? A sixth of the distance done.

Day 4

Wednesday 5th Mar
The photos have quickly become a thing now - a daily reminder of the turning point, half way through each cycle. We live opposite the beach so my cycle is along the sea front every day, from the house to the end of the sea wall near Epple Bay. 4 miles a day for week one. On my own today and no idea about my pace so a few minutes quicker! A lovely ride whilst the weather is good!!

Day 3

Monday 3rd Mar
Both of our wonderful daughters joined me after school today. Very different conditions from yesterday!!! A tenth of the way there!

Day 2

Sunday 2nd Mar
What a difference today. Really chilly and not able to see the next bay. Joined by daughter number 1, our DofE young leader, Rosey who was lovely company.

Day 1 - First 4 miles

Saturday 1st Mar
A bright St Davids day for my first ride of March. 4 miles done. 116 to go.
