Do It 4 Youth 120 mile Challenge

My target 120 mi

Here we go again!!!

In 2024 I walked 90 miles in April and raised over £700 for The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. So, when the 2025 challenge was announced to walk 120 miles in March, increasing the distance by 33% and with just one extra day in the month to do it, I couldn't resist signing up. Partly because I am fiercely competitive, even with myself, so I wanted to prove that what ever I did last year I could do more this year, but mostly because I am privileged enough to witness first hand the life-changing impact taking part in a DofE programme can have on young people. And sadly, not every child currently has the opportunity to take part.

So, throughout March, I will be lacing up my trainers every day, come rain or shine and I would be so grateful for any support you could offer. I have a feeling that this month is going to be tough, so if you can provide some motivation through a donation, however small, it will keep me going!

My Updates

The going has got tough

Wednesday 19th Mar
So, turns out, this is harder than I thought.

120 miles sounded manageable on paper, but in practice I'm needing to find upwards of an hour a day to walk. And quite often, that hour can only be found by setting my alarm and hour earlier in the mornings.

I'm over 80 miles in, and I'm on track to finish the 120 miles by the end of March. But this time last year being at 80 miles meant I only had a few more miles to do before I had completed. But this year, I still have 50% of that distance to do again.

And my legs are starting to ache. I want to say I'm fairly fit and active, but there isn't really time for a rest day in the schedule, and if I do take a day off, it just means that I have to make up that mileage over the next few days, which almost feels like it is defeating the point of the break.

If you are able to support me and make the miles worth it, I would be so grateful!

Why am I doing this?

Wednesday 19th Mar
It took me a week to tell anyone I was doing this. And even then, I only told a handful of people, and I didn't really want to ask for sponsorship.

Why?

Because I didn't quite believe that I was going to be able to walk 120 miles in 31 days, and I didn't want to let anyone down.

And then I managed to cover 28 miles in my first week, and there started to be a glimmer of possibility that this might actually happen.

But actually, the real motivation to get this fundraising page launched, was a conversation with a parent whose child we had just invited to their Gold Award. This young person has significant additional needs, and their parent described what doing the DofE had done for them. Yes, they had learned new skills and undertaken physical challenges, but more importantly they had learned how to break through their boundaries and had realised that there were no barriers to what they could achieve. I can't wait to welcome this young person, and their parent, to Buckingham Palace in May so that they can celebrate their amazing  achievement.

I firmly believe that the opportunity to learn and grow through a DofE programme is life changing, and I'm hoping I can raise £250 to enable more young people to participate.
