Young people today are up against so many challenges. From facing a mental health crisis to the daily pressures of social media, loneliness, isolation, and an uncertain future. And for those growing up in families where money is tight, the challenges are even greater.

Right now, so many are missing out, simply because they can’t afford to take part.

This winter, help make sure cost doesn't stand in the way of a young person's DofE journey. Your donation can help remove financial barriers, and provide young people with access to skills, support and sense of purpose, right when they need it most.

Michelle and Jay's story

Michelle’s eldest Jay used to feel like an outcast. He struggled with his mental health and didn’t know where he fitted in. Thanks to funding, he was able to take part in the DofE – and everything changed. He found confidence, friendship, and a place to be himself. Michelle says the DofE gave all her children a safe space to grow, feel accepted, and believe in themselves. Like you, we believe every young person deserves this opportunity.

“If I didn't receive funding, I wouldn't have had the chance to do DofE. IT would have been hard to afford it. It's probably one of the best decisions I've ever made - DofE is honestly amazing."

In 2024-25:

A record number of young people started their DofE in 2024-25 for the fourth year running - as we continue our work to widen access and remove barriers to participation.

With the support of our donors, we are partnering with community organisations, schools in deprived areas, Further Education colleges, prisons, and centres supporting young people with special educational needs and disabilities. Together, we’re providing targeted support to young people and organisations facing barriers to participation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the DofE need my help now?

Young people are facing growing challenges like securing a job in an unpredictable market, coping with the effects of the cost-of-living crisis and rising levels of poor mental health.

We want young people who face barriers to not get left behind, to use the DofE to enhance their skills and level the playing field. With almost 70 years experience helping young people transform their worlds, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is more relevant than ever – and ready to help.

How will my donation be used?

Your donation will ensure as many young people as possible have the opportunity to participate in the DofE, particularly those facing financial or other barriers.

Your donation could go towards funding:
  • Bronze, Silver and Gold participation places
  • Bursaries to help a young person with costs e.g. equipment (walking boots, sleeping bag etc)
  • Expedition equipment for Licensed Organisations e.g. tents, cooking equipment, first aid kits etc
These are essential to meet the goals of our Youth Without Limits strategy which aims to break down barriers to participation.
