Important information regarding changes to DofE Trek Together routes due to high temperatues.
As the temperature is forecast to reach 32 degrees on Saturday 11 July we've made the difficult decision to remove the 20 mile route option for the Trek Together event to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all event participants, staff and volunteers. The 10 mile route will be going ahead as planned and anyone signed up to the 20 mile route will automatically be transferred to the 10 mile route.
Start times are unaffected so you can still start your walk at your chosen start time. All start times from 8.00am and every 15 minutes until 10.30am will be for the 10 mile route. If you wish to move to an earlier start time, to avoid walking at the hotter parts of the day, you are welcome to do so. You don't have to let us know in advance just make sure you turn up 15 minutes before any of the alloted start times.
We appreciate that having to make these changes may come as a dissapointment but the health and wellbeing of all event participants, staff and volunteers is paramount. Hopefully these changes allow everyone to take part in the event and complete the walk while still having a brilliant time. Thank you for your understanding and support.
If you have any questions you can contact us at supportus@dofe.org
Please note that we're not able to accept registrations on the day.
If you missed out on signing up you can still come along to the events village located near the start/finish line on the Long Walk which will be full of activities brought to you by our fantastic partners, including Go Outdoors, and Craghopper as well as food and refreshment stalls. Get involved with games, competitions, and giveaways, or challenge yourself our climbing wall and immersive caving experience. There will also a variety of food and drink stalls on site.
If you've registered to take part in the the walk you can check out the FAQs and route map below.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a minimum age limit for taking part in the DofE Trek Together walk?
The minimum age to take part in the 20 - mile route is 16.
Anyone aged 14-17 must be accompanied by a responsible adult aged 18 or above who will also need to have registered to take part in the walk. One adult can be responsible for up to a maximum of three 14-17 year olds. Unfortunately due to the nature of the event babes in arms, pushchairs and prams are also not permitted on the walk.
The event village is open for everyone to enjoy with activities and entertainment taking place throughout the day, so even if you can't take part in the walk you can still join in the fun and celebrations.
The walk, along with the event village, will be in Windsor Great Park, a short walk from the centre of Windsor town. The nearest train stations are Eton and Windsor Riverside (direct trains from London Waterloo) and Windsor Central (trains via Slough) which are both approx. a 15 minute walk.
There will also be free parking located opposite the Windsor Great Park car park at the Cavalry Exercise Ground, Windsor, SL4 2BD. This is approx. a 20 minute walk to the events village and walk start line.
Please do travel to the event by public transport wherever possible as parking will be limited and traffic in and around the area can get busy on a weekend.
What time does the walk start?
8.00am, 8.15am, 8.30am, 8.45am, 9.00am, 9.30am, 9.45am, 10.00am, 10.15am, 10.30am
You will have selected a start time when you registered which will be on the email you received when you completed your registration.
If you want to move to a different start time that's fine just make sure you arrive no later than 15 minutes before one of the alloted start time to check in
The registration fee includes entry for either the 10 - or 20 - mile walk, an exclusive Trek Together technical t-shirt, special finishers medal along with a lunch, snacks and hot and cold drinks at rest stops along the route.
The walk will also be chip timed so you'll be able to see your finish time on the giant screen in the events village when you cross the finish line.
The route will be fully waymarked with signs and marshals will also be in place at certain points. Plenty of toilet facilities will be provided both in the events village and at the lunch and rest stops on the route. First aiders will be on hand if needed.
Are you able to sign up on the day?
We're not able to accept registrations on the day so anyone wanting to take part must register by the 3 July.
Due to the nature of the event some of the route will take place in parkland, riverside paths and countryside which means that some of the surfaces will be uneven and possibly narrow in places. Therefore it's not suitable for people who struggle with their mobility or need an aid to walk.
10 and 20 miles are long distances to cover in one day so you should be of a reasonable fitness and confident that you're able to complete the full walk. We'd recommend you do some practice walks before the event to ensure that you're able to complete the distance comfortably.
If you have any questions about the routes or are unsure if the walk is suitable for you, please drop us an email at supportus@dofe.org
The events village will be on grass, but will be made as accessible as possible, including the provision of accessible toilets, so if the walk isn't suitable for you, you can still come along to take in the atmosphere and enjoy the other events and activities taking place.
How will I follow the route?
There will be toilet facilities availalbe at the events village and rest stop at approximately the 5 mile point on the route.
Can I see a map of the routes?
Yes you can view the route maps below.
10 mile route
20 mile route
As both routes will be fully signposted and marshals will be postioned at key points along the route you won't need to bring a copy of the map with you.
You'll be provided with a DofE Trek Together t-shirt on the day which you can wear on the walk.
It is forecast to be very hot on the day of the event so we recommend that you bring sunscreen (minimum factor 30), and cap/hat to keep the sun off you, and wear light weight breathable clothing.
A packed lunch will be provided along with soft and hot drinks at the rest stop. We would recommend that you bring a filled water bottle with you (recommended 3 litres) and any additional snacks you may want. Water refills will be available at the rest stop and at additional water stations on the route. Dietary requirements will be catered for where possible.
First aiders will be on hand throughout the event but you may also want to bring some personal items with you such as blister plasters and pain killers. You should also bring a charged mobile phone in case of emergencies.
DofE Trek Together is a walking event and not a race so for the safety and comfort of all our participants it is not permitted to run on the routes.
We will have chip timing in place so that you're able to see the time the walk has taken you to complete (this will be displayed on our big screen when you cross the finish line). The event is not a race and we would ask that you go at a comfortable pace for yourself making sure to enjoy the beautiful scenery and iconic landmarks around the route.
Can I sign up as a team?
Yes of course, the more the merrier.
You can choose to set up a team when you complete your first registration and invite others to join your team via your fundraising page, which is automatically set up for you when you complete your registration.
Please note that the person setting up the team must complete their own registration and pay the £15 registration fee otherwise the team won't be set up for others to join.
If you want to register more than one person and add them to your team you'll need to complete a separate registration for each person taking part in your team, and remember to choose the same timeslot and route distance if you want to start the walk together.
There's no limit to the number of people that can join a team so why not invite all your friends, family and colleagues to join you.
If you're wanting to register a corporate team and pay for the registrations in bulk by invoice please contact peter.watson@dofe.org to arrange this.
Can I bring my dog with me?
We love dogs but due to the large number of people expected, the length of the routes and the comfort of all the participants, unfortunately dogs are not permitted on the walk (with the acceptance of special assistance dogs).
Dogs are allowed within the events village and spectators areas.
Is there a minimum amount of fundraising required to take part?
Everyone who registers for the walk will automatically have a personal fundraising page set up which they can use to ask people to sponsor them.
How will my fundraising help the DofE?
